MINING CLAIMS

CHINESE MINING CLAIMS

In this list mining claims with Chinese American names begin in 1855 and come to an end after 1889. The Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), the Scott Act (1888), and the Geary Act (1892) delivered violent blows to the civil rights of Chinese Americans. No longer could laborer and other skilled and unskilled could come to America. No longer could Chinese women come to America. The Page Act reversed female Chinese immigrants to land in any port in the United States. The shouts of gambling and prostitution among the whites served to smear even those women who wanted to be with family members. After 1892 all Chinese had to have a “certificate of citizenship” or they were here illegally. Their presence in America continued to force them into marginalized homes and economic disarray.

What happened in 1889 to restrict mining claims? Nothing we have found in this study give us clues. They continued mining the Feather River bed, its banks, near waterfalls, on gravel and sandy bars, even adjacent to property white Americans and white Europeans owned. Rocky Bar, Jackson’s Bar, Indian Bar, Potters Bar, Island Bar were just a few of the unknown places that had been mined two or three times before. Success still cane for a few and they elected to return to their homeland. Others could not afford even the price of boat passage.
