1893-1901

This information was taken from an index of a register of deaths ledger on file at Special Collections, Meriam Library, California State University, Chico.  Some of the names were hard to read, they were listed here as they appeared to me.  Place of death is listed within the parentheses.  The “suburbs of Oroville” could be the Oroville Chinatown or other parts of the towns or populated places around the Feather River drainage. By the time of the 1900 census the area enumeration districts and Chinese population had expanded beyond the 1860 census boundaries. The 1910 census was taken after the flooding 

Feather River (March 1907) destroyed the area around Broderick and Safford Street.

May 3, 1893 Ah Toy.  57 years, single, cause of death was consumption, occupation was laborer, no physician.  (suburbs of Oroville)

June 14, 1893   Dog Shaw.  60 years, single, cause of death was old age,

occupation was gardener, physician was Chang Sing (suburbs of Oroville).  A second entry was found under the name of Dog Chan on the same day, same age, same cause of death, and same occupation.  However, this entry indicated the deceased was married and his physician had been Chong Sang. (place of death was listed under Bangor, Oroville, Forbestown).

October 9, 1893 Ah Rock.  51 years, single, cause of death was consumption, Occupation was miner, no physician (suburbs of Oroville).

November 19, 1893 Chang Lam Gee.  36 years, single, cause of death was  consumption, occupation was washman at Chinatown, no physician (suburbs of Oroville).

November 27, 1893 Ling Gip.  57 years, single, cause of death was heart failure, occupation was miner, no physician.  (Oroville Chinatown).

November 31, 1893 Mau How.  73 years, married, cause of death was La Grippe, Occupation was church sexton, physician was F. H. Benjamin (suburbs of Oroville).

December 26, 1893 Kung Ye Jack.  48 years, single, cause of death congestion of

the lungs, occupation was cook, physician was F. H. Benjamin, died in Chinatown (suburbs of Oroville).

December 28, 1893 Wing Tan ?  56 years, single, cause of death was laryngitis, occupation was washman, physician was F. H. Benjamin, died in Chinatown (suburbs of Oroville).

January 29, 1894 Ah Lee. 64 years, married, cause of death was hard to read but looked like “pranchitis” (possibly pancreatitis or peritonitis), Occupation was farmer, physician was F. H. Benjamin (near Oroville).

April 31, 1894 Ah Gum.  31 years, married, cause of death was consumption, no  physician was in attendance and no occupation was listed (vicinity of Oroville).

August 12, 1894 A Show (Chinese ?).  48years, married, cause of death was strangulated hernia, physician was F. H. Benjamin (Butte County Infirmary at Oroville).

August 27, 1894 Ah Luck.  38 years, single, cause of death was phlebitis, physician was T. W. Service, no occupation was listed for him (died at the Infirmary).

November 24, 1894 O Bing.  54 years, single, cause of death was consumption, no physician was listed nor was his occupation (in and around Oroville).

March 20, 1895 Wong Guey.  42 years, single, cause of death was shot to death, no physician but coroner’s inquest, no occupation was listed (in and around Oroville).

March 20, 1895 Geany ? Ling Wong.  32 years, single, cause of death was dropsy,  Physician had been a China doctor, no occupation was listed, interred in Chinese Cemetery (in and around Oroville).

March 25, 1896 Mary.  4 year old female child, cause of death was eating toadstools, determined by Julian Burroughs, Deputy Coroner (Oroville).

January 18, 1897 Ah Hand.  70 years, single, cause of death could not be read but It looked like “marasmus”,  (might be miasma) no occupation was listed, the physician was T. B. Rearden M.D. (Butte County Infirmary).

January 22, 1897 Chee Ching Oie.  58 years, married, cause of death was consumption, no occupation listed, physician was Ah Young a China doctor (Oroville Chinatown).

February 1, 1897 Young Ying.  76 years, married ?, cause of death was accidental drowning, no occupation was listed, determined by the coroner E. M. Woodman. (Butte County)

February 11, 1897 Ching Tai.  46 years, married, cause of death was asthma, mitral insufficiency and two cardiac syncope, physician was Joseph  McChesney M. D. (died at Quincy, Plumas County, but was  brought to Oroville).

February 19, 1897 Ah Mow.  59 years, married, cause of death was intestinal impact (intestinal obstruction ?), no occupation was listed, physician was J. W. Wilson M. D. (Oroville).  It will be seen later in this study that Ah Mow was the owner of many parcels of land near Stafford and nearby streets. 

March 2, 1897 Ah Wong Mook.  66 years, single, cause of death was natural causes, no physician was in attendance (died in Chinatown).

March 17, 1897 Toy Lee (Chong Qyong You).  52 years, married, cause of death Was edematous laryngitis, physician was F. W. Benjamin M. D., and no occupation was listed (Oroville)

April 25, 1897 Ah Kong.  47 years, married, cause of death was compression of brain, no occupation was listed, and was not attended by a  physician (Oroville).

April 26, 1897 Sam Paul (Chinese-sp?).  60 years, single, cause of death was gastritis, physician was T. B. Reardan M. D. (died at the Butte County Infirmary).

June 30, 1897 Ching Qung Quong.  2 months and 20 days, boy born in Oroville,

cause of death was gastroenteritis, physician was W. F. Gates M. D. (Oroville).

December 13, 1897 Moon How.  57 years, married ?, cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan M. D. (Oroville).

March 13, 1898 Ahouie ?  35 years, married, cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan M. D. (Butte County Infirmary).

April 5, 1898 Jee Yick.  47 years, single, cause of death is pyemia (type of blood poisoning), no occupation is listed, physician was T. B. Rearden (Oroville).

April 20, 1898 Wing Wong.  40 years, married ?, cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan M. D. (Butte County Infirmary).

May 24, 1898 Ah Joe.  45 years, single, cause of death was remittent fever, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan M. D. (Oroville).

October 7, 1898 Quong Wah Yuck.  45 years, married, cause of death was accidental, no occupation listed, determined by E. M Woodman, coroner (Butte County Infirmary).

October 13, 1898 Chee Jung.  56 years, married ?, cause of death was suicide, no occupation was listed, determined by Deputy Coroner Burroughs (Butte County Infirmary).

October 17, 1898 Chong Chin.  60 years, single, cause of death was lack of nourishment, no occupation listed, determined by E. M. Woodman, coroner (Butte County Butte Infirmary).

October 28, 1898 Ling Hoy.  55 years, married ?, cause of death was determined to

be natural causes, no occupation was not listed, determined by Deputy Coroner Burroughs (Butte County Infirmary). 

December 8, 1898 Ah Chung.  60 years, married, cause of death looks like “acitis”, no occupation was listed, physician was F. W. Benjamin M. D. (Oroville).

December 12, 1898 Wan Coon.  65 years, married ?, cause of death was general debility, no occupation was listed, informants were Chinese residents Chin Wy and Ah Young (Oroville).

March 12, 1899 Ah Young.  67 years, married ?, cause of death was pulmonary edema, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan (Butte County Infirmary).

March 27, 1899 De Ah Due.  48 years, married ?, cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan (Butte County Infirmary).

April 20, 1899 Gee Fon.  50 years, single, cause of death was consumption, no occupation was listed, physician was J. H. M. Karsner, interred In the China Cemetery (in or near Oroville).

April 28, 1899 Lor ? Fok.  42 years, married, cause of death was laryngeal phthisis, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan, interred at the China Cemetery (Oroville).

May 1, 1899 Lee Ah Soon.  41 years, married ?, cause of death was dropsy, occupation was listed as miner, his physician was a China doctor (in and near Oroville).

May 4, 1899 Ye Ah.  54 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as old age, no occupation was listed, physician was listed as Dr. Gee Wah, interment was the China Cemetery (in or near Oroville).

May 10, 1899 Due Joy.  78 years, married ?, cause of death was laryngeal phthisis, no occupation was listed, physician was T. B. Reardan,  burial was in the Chinese Cemetery (Butte County Infirmary).  

June 6, 1899 Ah Gong.  65 years, married ?, cause of death looks like “marasmus,” physician was T. B. Rearden, burial was at the China Cemetery.  No place of death was listed  (Oroville). 

July 3, 1899 Lee Gum.  2 months and 4 days, boy child born in California, cause of death was remittent fever, physician was J. N. Wilson. No place of death was listed (but probably was Oroville).

August 21, 1899 Tooy Fook.  70 years, married ?, cause of death was cerebral apoplexy, no occupation, physician was T. B. Reardan (Butte County Infirmary).

September 5, 1899 Ah Chung.  53 years, single, cause of death was mitral insufficiency, no occupation listed, physician T. B. Reardan.  No place of death was listed (Orovill, Butte Couty Infirmary).

September 18, 1899 Gee Ock.  45 years, married ?, cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver, occupation was listed as laborer, physician was T. B. Rearden (Oroville).

October 6, 1899 Lee Ting Ching.  66 years, married, cause of death was tuberculosis, no occupation was listed, physician was Lee Quen (Chinatown).
December 8, 1899 Mrs. Ah Goy.  50 years, married female, cause of death was old age, physician was Ah Gune, interred in the China Cemetery.  No place of death was listed.

February 24, 1900 Ah Ane ?  52 years, married ?, cause of death was malarial fever, occupation was listed as miner, no doctor was in attendance (in or near Oroville).

February 25, 1900 Hop Sing.  69 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as old age and general debility, occupation may have been medical doctor, no physician was in attendance (in or near Oroville).

March 18 1900 Hoy Loi.  88 year old female, married ?, cause of death was listed as old age – senile debility, no physician in attendance, witnesses were H. Bird and C. D. Brandt (Oroville and vicinity).

April 12, 1900 Infant Jo Jim.  10 day old male child born in Oroville, cause of death was listed as natural causes?, no doctor was in attendance (in or near Oroville).

May 16, 1900 Gee Hoy or Gee Hay.  52 years, single, cause of death was disease of the heart, occupation was listed as laundryman, physician in charge was E. J. Tucker (in or near Oroville).

July 12, 1900 Young Yow.  76 years, married ?, cause of death was old age, no occupation was listed, there was no physician in attendance but witnesses were Ah Young and another (in or near Oroville).

July 31, 1900 Ah Lee ?  55 years, single, cause of death was malarial fever, no occupation was listed, there was no physician in attendance but witnesses were He Dow and another?.

August 17, 1900 Tung Yet.  68 years, married, cause of death was bronchitis, no occupation was listed, witnesses were He Loy and Mrs. John Williams (in or near Oroville).

October 13, 1900 Gee Quong Sing.  71 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as chronic gastritis, no occupation was listed, no physician was listed as having been in attendance (in or near Oroville).

October 22, 1900 Yuong Leong.  50 years, single, cause of death was consumption, no occupation was listed, no doctor was in attendance (in or near Oroville).

December 15, 1900 Gong Doo.  38 years, married, cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis, no occupation was listed, physician was J. W. Wilson (in or near Oroville).

December 17, 1900 Jem Tre.  51 years, single, cause of death was laryngeal phthisis, occupation was listed as laborer, physician was T. B. Reardan (in or near Oroville).

January 3, 1901 Hin Doo.  50 years, married ?, cause of death was chronic nephritis, occupation was listed as cook, physician in attendance was T. B. Reardan (Town of Oroville).

January 19, 1901 Wong Tan.  68 years, single, cause of death was natural causes, no occupation was listed, no physician in attendance, witness was Ah Young (Town of Oroville).

January 22, 1901 Oh Buane ?  63 years, married ?, cause of death was consumption, no occupation was listed, physician in attendance was a China doctor (Oroville and).

January 24, 1901 Lee Yuk.  57 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as natural causes, no occupation was listed, physician in attendance was a China doctor (Oroville).

January 25, 1901 Wong Bing.  66 years, single, cause of death was natural causes, no occupation was listed, no physician was in attendance, witnesses were Gee Sing and Ah Fawn (Town of Oroville).

March 18, 1901 Ah Fook.  60 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as natural causes, determined by the coroner P. T. Bullington, occupation was listed as a miner (Oroville).

March 25, 1901 Ah Doe.  51 years, single, cause of death was listed as consumption, occupation had been laborer, physician in attendance was a China doctor (Oroville).

June 5, 1901 Tong Len.  68 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as burns from fire, no occupation was listed physician in attendance was J. H. Karsner M. D. (Oroville and vicinity).

July 14, 1901 Ah Wan or Ah Wau.  67 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as natural causes, determined by the coroner, occupation was listed as a miner (Oroville).

September 16, 1901 Sarah Johnson( African American).  70 years, single, born in Virginia, cause of death looked like “copeaemise,” physician was E. A. Newbold (Town of Oroville). 

October 30, 1901 Wong Tong.  39 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as natural causes, determined by Bullington coroner inquest (Town of Oroville).
November 18, 1901 Ling Hing.  55 years, married ?, cause of death was listed as natural causes, determined by coroner’s jury, no occupation was listed (Oroville).
