OROVILLE DAY BOOK LISTING – CHINATOWN 1904

This listing was a copy of a hand written/transcribed ledger whose provenance remains unclear. It’s day book title is puzzling as well.

Day books would normally appear as an accounting tool keeping track of money coming in and out of a business per customer (or not) for a period of time.  Seems to be a listing by name, sex  and age for people living in the area around Safford and Broderick in Oroville the old Chinatown neighborhood. Groupings of names of four females together, four white names, suggest prostitutionub that dwelling. We, however do not know if the people were connected and lived in a single dwelling. Other entries names suggest spouses living in one dwelling. There are two groupings  that refer to the name of just “Chinaman”. These men might have been reported living in that dwelling by someone else but did not know names. Some of the information was hard to read, a question mark “?” was placed behind those names or words that were hard to decipher.
