BUTTE COUNTY
OPHIR TOWNSHIP, OROVILLE
CHINESE
This information was taken from a copy of the 1870 census microfilm located at the Meriam Library, California State University, Chico. Some of the names and occupations in this listing were difficult to interpret. A question mark has been placed where the information is unclear.
No census marshall maps were published for California districts during the 9th census. As a result we are still looking for other map or geographic sources to explain the route and the location of the numbered dwellings mentioned for the 1870 census. Two years later (1872) a local judge (Safford) had ordered the creation of a land ownership map hoping to file an upgraded charter incorporating Oroville. We have that data in print form but it needs to be digitized. We will be going forward with that part of this website. A discernable Chinese community, including all of Broderick and Stafford streets, was owned or being leased or rented by Chinese as residents or businesses is evidenced by this census. By this time dwellings and businesses had spread to Lincoln, Oak, Hunton, Bird, and Montgomery streets and Chinese were living adjacent to other white immigrants. The dwelling numbers differed
substantially from those of the 8th census in 1860. The earlier census dwelling numbers were of no help. The Chinese Temple was built in the decade between these two censuses. We have data on that construction and can link to the available data from other sources. Recently people from the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley along with others came to Oroville and accomplished a major photographic effort to preserve the objects by taking images in and around the temple. Their labor has helped bring the Oroville Chinese past into focus and brought a lot of interest.
Prostitution was still quite a problem in Oroville. Although many were described as “whores”, others described themselves as housekeepers. Most all of the females described in these two ways lived with children and other Chinese people in some of the defined dwellings. The use of the term “Ah” does not really help us to identify Chinese people. It was meant as Mr. but we could not find where the word originated but it was used wrongly thinking the given name was the surname. Virtually all of the Chinese who immigrated to California and worked the gold rush were from Canton, a south China province that had been open for trade with British, French and American companies. The two Opium Wars had led the defeated Qing dynasty to give up land and give expensive reparations to the winners. The Taiping Rebellion (1852-1864) had also reaked havoc in the peasantry around what is now Hong Kong and Macau (Pearl River). Many younger men chose to escape economically privation to the gold mines in California, British Columbia, Oregon Territory, Washington Territory, and Australia.
