8TH CENSUS 1860
BUTTE COUNTY
OPHIR TOWNSHIP, OROVILLE
This information was taken from the census microfilm on file on the second floor of the Meriam Library, California State University, Chico. Some of the names in this listing were difficult to decipher and a question mark has been placed where the information is unclear.
The census marshals who conducted this census did not record the location of the dwellings visited. Ophir township included much of the city of Oroville as it existed prior to 1860. Maps of 1855 (when the city was named Ophir) and 1860 do not include the development of the traditional Chinatown model. Evidence from other sources suggest the area was called Chinatown as early as 1852.
In fact there is mention of an identification of a neighborhood fronting the Feather River later to become a major Chinese community. The dwelling numbers for this census suggest, however, that much of the Chinese immigrant population lived contiguously if not right next to each other in several different parts of the township. Interspersed with the Chinese occupants of dwellings are some non-Chinese names. This adjacency indicates Chinese people lived near and/or with Euro- Americans and other immigrant people when the census was taken that year. This also suggests that the “Chinatown” model had not yet fully formed yet county officials write as though there is a separate space. Dwelling numbers 1707 through 1890 are listed in a row, however, give us the hint that a “separate space”, was slowly being forced on the majority of the Chinese people. A census map noting the placement of dwellings was not produced for 1860s Oroville. Recorders maps may cast some light on this problem.
